Job description

Fortius Clinic is looking to hire a Healthcare Assistant to join their Theatre Department. This will be to work in their Surgical Centre in Marylebone, London.

As a key member of the theatre care team, you will support registered practitioners to deliver safe, efficient, and compassionate peri‑operative care. Working within your assessed competencies and under the supervision of a registered nurse/ODP, you will assist with patient preparation and recovery, maintain a clean and safe theatre environment, support stock and revenue capture processes, and contribute to effective communication with Registered Nurses, Operating Department Practitioners (ODPs), Surgeons, Anaesthetists, Radiographers, Sterile Services, Recovery staff, Scheduling/Admissions, and Administration teams.

Key Responsibilities

A. Patient Care & Peri‑operative Support

  • Assist in implementing agreed care plans, ensuring timely, person‑centred support across pre‑operative, intra‑operative, and post‑operative stages, within your competencies and training.

  • Prepare patients for theatre: identity and consent checks (as directed), allergies confirmation, escorting, chaperoning, positioning assistance, pressure‑area care, thermal care, and dignity/privacy at all times.

  • Provide emotional reassurance and clear, compassionate communication to reduce anxiety and optimise patient experience.

  • Support safe patient transfer and handling using appropriate equipment and techniques; escalate mobility/skin integrity concerns promptly.

B. Theatre Environment & Infection Prevention

  • Maintain theatre cleanliness and tidiness before, during, and after procedures; follow infection prevention and control (IPC) policies (hand hygiene, PPE, aseptic awareness, waste streams).

  • Assist with room turnaround: remove waste safely, re‑stock consumables, check equipment surfaces/adjacent areas, and prepare for next case.

C. Clinical Tasks (within assessed competencies)

  • Undertake delegated clinical procedures once trained and signed‑off (e.g., basic observations, urinalysis, point‑of‑care tests, skin prep assistance, limb prepping/draping assistance, specimen handling, runner duties).

  • Support scrub/circulating teams: open sterile consumables correctly, manage non‑sterile tasks, and act as runner between sterile field and support areas.

  • Assist in recovery: comfort measures, positioning, fetching equipment/fluids as directed, and handover support.

D. Documentation, Communication & Governance

  • Contribute to accurate, timely care records and reports; follow established communication and reporting systems (including electronic systems) and escalate promptly if concerned.

  • Participate in regular theatre meetings, safety briefings, and debriefs; share learning and contribute to continuous improvement.

  • Uphold Equality & Diversity standards, treating all patients and colleagues with dignity and respect.

E. Stock, Equipment & Revenue Capture

  • Support stock control: receive, rotate, and top‑up consumables; check expiries; report variances/damages; handle pharmaceuticals in line with policy.

  • Ensure revenue capture by documenting item usage accurately (including implants/consumables), recording chargeable items, and documenting any wastage.

  • Perform basic equipment checks within scope; report faults immediately and remove unsafe devices from use.

F. Safety, Escalation & Professional Conduct

  • Work within your competence; recognise limitations; seek help and escalate concerns to senior staff without delay.

  • Take personal responsibility for health & safety; follow safe working practices that protect yourself, patients, and colleagues.

Full-time permanent position.

37.5 hours per week.

Monday - Friday with on-call weekend availability.

Job requirements

  • Qualifications, Knowledge, Experience & Skills

    Essential

    • GCSEs (or equivalent) in Maths and English

    • NVQ Level 3 in Healthcare (or equivalent, e.g., Care Certificate)

    • Minimum of 2 years’ experience within a healthcare setting

    • Team player with strong initiative; adaptable, helpful and caring

    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

    • Strong organisational and multi‑tasking abilities; able to work effectively under pressure

    • IT literate, with confidence using clinical documentation systems, stock/revenue platforms and learning systems

    • Flexible, supportive and patient‑focused

    Desirable

    • Evidence of competency sign‑off for delegated clinical tasks relevant to theatres (on appointment or within probation)

    • Previous experience in a theatre environment

    • Knowledge of orthopaedic or spinal clinical procedures

    • Good IT skills (advanced level)
