Job Overview

Our dedicated orthopaedic surgical centre is due to open in October later this year. You will be part of a newly formed theatre team, working from a state-of-the-art facility in London’s West End, and providing comprehensive care to perioperative patients who have undergone day surgery.

Along with the rest of the theatre team, you will share responsibility for the management and organisation of the operating department, helping to ensure smooth, timely and efficient processes and procedures within a safe environment. You will promote safeguarding and risk management in respect of patients, employees and visitors.

Dimensions

Reporting to the Theatre Manager, you will lead a team of scrub practioners working closely with anaesthetic and recovery colleagues. The ASC is a day care centre with three operating theatres dedicated to orthopaedic surgery.

Key Performance Indicators

Patient satisfaction.

  • Clinical quality indicators (such as infection rates).
  • Tight maintenance of par stock levels to minimise stock wastage.
  • Ensure the achievement of 100% revenue capture.

Principal Accountabilities

Lead a team of scrub practioners taking overall responsibility for the delivery of the service.

  • Ensure the safe care of the patient during the perioperative phase of their care.
  • Assemble, check and prepare the appropriate surgical instruments and consumables for a wide range of operative procedures incorporating various types of surgery.
  • Manage the use of suppliers, supplies and equipment.
  • Manage the operating list, ensuring the equipment is used in an appropriate and safe manner.
  • Conduct mandatory patient checks including informed consent, patient identity and operative site prior to the start of procedure.
  • Conduct mandatory surgical checks prior to the start of the procedure, during and pre wound closure.
  • Monitor the patient’s condition throughout the procedure, taking appropriate action to manage any arising complications through contingency planning.
  • Communicate effectively with all other members of multi-disciplinary team involved in the care of the patient.
  • Monitor, order, receive and check stock items including consumables, equipment and drugs.
  • Complete all written documentation in a timely manner and to an acceptable level.
  • Lead and mentor the scrub team and theatre staff more widely
  • Promote and ensure an environment conducive to the continuing prevention and control of infection for all staff, patients and visitors.
  • Ensure any accidents or complaints are fully documented and that the appropriate manager is informed.
  • Drive improvement in practice and policy when changes have arisen resulting from an audit, complaint or newly issued guidance.
  • Work within NMC or HPC Codes of Practice.
  • Participate in departmental audits and audit reports.

Job requirements

Qualifications / Knowledge / Skills / Experience

Essential
Registered Practitioner with NMC or HPC registration

Surgical First Assistant course

Minimum of 4 years post qualification experience in theatre practice

Evidence of clinical reasoning skills across a varied patient case mix.

Highly organised with outstanding attention to detail and the ability to prioritise information and workload appropriately

Ability to concentrate for long periods of time, reacting quickly in an emergency when required

Effective communicator with the ability to build professional relationships.

Evidence of continuous professional development

Desirable

Knowledge of orthopaedic day surgery

ILS/ALS Qualification

ENB 998 and/or mentorship course and/or D32/D33/A1
