Purpose of Job

The post-holder is responsible and accountable for:

  • Deputising for the deputy / lead practitioner of the anaesthetic department.
  • Assisting in the day-to-day management of theatres.
  • Acts in a supervisory capacity and as a mentor to colleagues and non-registered support staff.
  • To achieve a professional working relationship with all department users and colleagues.
  • To achieve and maintain quality care through up-to-date research-based practice.
  • To provide and maintain a safe working environment for Patients, Colleagues and all Department Visitors.
  • Exercising accountability as set out in the NMC/ HCPC Code of Professional Conduct.

Principal Accountabilities

MANAGERIAL

  • Demonstrate the ability to support the team under pressure.
  • Demonstrate an ability to organise and plan their own work and that of others.
  • Coordinate with other departments to ensure smooth patient pathway.
  • Have an awareness of dealing with conflict.
  • To ensure the provision of a welcoming, caring and safe environment for patients.
  • Orientate new staff, including bank and agency, to the department.
  • Report the failure or mechanical problems of any items in line with Hospital Policy and arrange for repair or replacement of it in consultation with manager
  • Contribute to maintenance of equipment asset register.

CLINICAL

  • Assist the scrub and circulating staff during the perioperative period.
  • Take responsibility for the assessment, planning, delivery, and evaluation of care for a list of patients.
  • Support all team members in the management of the patient caseload throughout the perioperative period.
  • Recognise the workload of colleagues and provide support as necessary.
  • To include identification of operating tables and other equipment that may be required in conjunction with the scrub members of the Team.
  • Promote the safety, wellbeing, and interests of patients, staff and visitors to the clinical area.
  • Ensure compliance with departmental policies and procedures.
  • Liaise and communicate with members of the multi-disciplinary team.
  • Use in a responsible and safe manner the equipment and facilities provided by the Hospital.
  • Stocking and ordering supplies, including procurement, medicines and medication.
  • Maintain the safe custody, handling of drugs in accordance with hospital policy
  • Demonstrate flexibility regarding reasonable requests to adjust off duty and hours of work.
  • Maintain up to date skills and knowledge and maintain awareness of specialist skills in anaesthetics and recovery.
  • Audit quality of care to improve service and ensure standards are maintained and to be involved in audit capture of raw data and reporting
  • Ensure incidents are reported on the day they occur
  • Developing action plans, as well as implementing/embedding changes as a result thereof
  • Participation in the on-call rota
  • Participate in education, training and development of other staff
  • Ensure accurate and contemporaneous documentation of care and adhering to local policy.
  • To always ensure confidentiality, only releasing confidential information obtained during the course of employment to those acting in an official capacity in accordance with the provisions of the Data Protection Act and its amendments
  • Maintaining awareness of current clinical standards and national guidelines for safe and effective patient care.
  • 100% compliance with mandatory training.

PROFESSIONAL

  • Maintain accurate and up to date documentation.
  • Contributes to the development and evaluation of practice.
  • Act as mentor to junior/new colleagues, non-registered support staff and students.
  • Work with senior colleagues to develop clinical expertise and evidence-based practice.
  • Contribute to the application and evaluation of current research and audit findings.
  • Act always in accordance with the Professional Code of Conduct and guiding documents.
  • Assist in policy updates to reflect current practice
  • Follow Fortius policies and SOPs and advocate these policies and teaches them to staff

COMMUNICATION

  • Ensure effective communication is maintained between staff, Senior Managers, Directorates, patients, and other stakeholders on all issues impacting upon theatre performance
  • Communicate with all departments to ensure smooth running of operating lists.

RISK & CLINICAL GOVERNANCE

  • To evaluate Policies and Procedures and Standard Operating Procedures in line with NICE guidance, NatSSIPs, LocSSIPs, NCEPOD, RCoA and the Hospital’s policies and procedures, and educating staff to accept ownership of these.
  • Drive improvement in practice and policy when changes have arisen resulting from an audit, complaint or newly issued guidance.

OTHER DUTIES

  • To undertake any other similar duties, as required by the manager.

FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT

  • Ensure achievement of revenue capture.
  • Identify the need for new and replacement equipment and consumables, and escalate appropriately.

STRATEGY AND SERVICE IMPROVEMENT

  • Support line managers, Lead Practitioner and Heads of Theatres in identifying both new opportunities for the individual services within the department, arising from changes in the external environment or internal innovation
  • Challenge existing practices, ensuring that progressive solutions take into account models of best practise
  • Assist in managing service improvement projects within agreed timeframes and financial targets

Job requirements

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE - Qualifications/ Skills/ Experience

Essential

Registered Practitioner with NMC or HCPC registration

Educated to degree level with considerable further professional development

Strong organisational and communications skills

Demonstrable experience of driving growth

Proven ability to lead a multi-functional team

Minimum of 4 years post qualification experience in operating theatre setting

Evidence of clinical reasoning skills across a varied patient case mix

Evidence of continuous professional development

ILS/ALS Qualification

Desirable

Experience of tight budgetary management including Profit and Loss accountability

Mentorship/Practice Assessor

Sedation course
