Job description

We are seeking an experienced Senior Theatre Practitioner – Anaesthetics to join our dynamic theatre team. In this pivotal role, you will deliver safe, high-quality anaesthetic support across all theatre services, with the flexibility to assist in Recovery when required.

As a senior member of the team, you will provide clinical leadership, supervising and mentoring junior practitioners, non-registered support staff, and students. You will actively contribute to service development, maintain operational efficiency, and ensure compliance with mandatory training, policies, and standard operating procedures.

You will be professionally accountable in line with the NMC / HCPC Code of Professional Conduct, ensuring practice aligns with national guidance and best standards of care.

Clinical Responsibilities

Deliver expert anaesthetic care throughout the perioperative pathway, including patient assessment, monitoring, and emergency response. Assist in Recovery when needed, maintain accurate documentation, ensure safe medication handling, and uphold compliance with equipment checks, audits, and mandatory training.

Leadership & People Management

Provide senior clinical leadership by mentoring and supervising junior staff, supporting appraisals and competency assessments, and deputising for lead practitioners. Foster an inclusive, collaborative team culture.

MDT Collaboration

Work closely with surgeons, anaesthetists, theatre staff, and the wider multidisciplinary team to ensure safe, coordinated patient care and smooth theatre operations.

Governance & Compliance

Adhere to all policies, SOPs, and national guidance, report incidents promptly, contribute to investigations, and support service development initiatives. Maintain confidentiality and GDPR compliance at all times.

Job requirements

Essential

  • Registered Practitioner with NMC or HCPC registration.

  • Minimum 4 years post-qualification experience in an operating theatre environment.

  • Strong clinical reasoning and decision-making skills across varied caseloads.

  • Proven ability to work autonomously and take clinical leadership for anaesthetic services.

  • Experience supervising and mentoring junior staff and students.

  • Evidence of Continuous Professional Development (CPD).

  • Immediate Life Support (ILS) qualification.

  • Commitment to 100% compliance with mandatory training, policies, and SOPs.

Desirable

  • Degree-level qualification or equivalent experience.

  • Advanced Life Support (ALS) qualification (or willingness to achieve).

  • Mentorship / Practice Assessor qualification.

  • Sedation course.

  • Experience in budgetary management, service improvement, or revenue capture.

  • Experience supporting or leading audits, quality improvement, or service redesign projects.
