Overall Purpose

To work as part of the Operating Department and Surgical Centre Team, whose aim is directed towards a high standard of patient care, by providing a safe, caring, and efficient service within the Department. To have a flexible approach when undertaking a wide range of routine and ad-hoc tasks, and to be able to work unsupervised at various times.

Principal Accountabilities

Professional

1. To be aware of and comply with the hospital’s policies and procedures and relevant directives.

2. To liase and co-operate with the wards, other departments and personnel within the hospital.

3. To be aware of the Fire Regulations, fire procedures and evacuation protocols.

4. To be aware of and comply with the Health and Safety at Work Act and COSHH procedures.

5. To stay up to date with all Mandatory Training and E-Learning

6. To maintain a high standard of personal hygiene and presentation

7. Report any accidents concerning staff, patients, or visitors to the Theatre Manager nominated deputy

Clinical for Theatres

1. To assist in the preparation of the Operating Theatres, prior to surgical procedures.

2. Assist in the transport of equipment to and from theatres/wards as required

3. To move, assemble and disassemble the Operating Tables to suit the needs of lists and individual cases.

4. To assist with the safe transfer and positioning of patients from one area to another, following relevant training.

5. To assist with the safe transfer and manual handling of patients to and from the Operating Table

6. Assist in turnover of theatres between cases and/or lists i.e. cleaning equipment and floors, changing equipment, and transferring patient to and from recovery and the anaesthetic rooms.

7. To participate in the preparation, cleaning and clearing of the theatres in between and at the end of cases.

8. Also to clean theatre furniture and equipment at the end of the list under the guidance of a theatre practitioner. Assist in maintaining high standards of cleanliness in the department.

9. Maintain and clean waste rooms/ sluices in theatres.

10. Report any faulty equipment to the person coordinating the shift.

11. Check linen stock every morning and inform the linen porter of what is required.

12. Unpack and store linen when it arrives.

13. To assist with the removal of waste from Theatres to the Bin Store.

14. Every morning check and prepare all patient trolleys ensuring the stock complies with the stock list on display in Recovery.

15. Clean and check stock levels on each patient trolley including the O2 cylinder between each patient.

16. All gas cylinders need to be checked every morning and changed as required.

17. Check the gas cylinder bank stock also between patients.

18. In consultation with anaesthetic and recovery, staff collect beds from floors.

19. Ensure all empty boxes are removed from storage areas and corridors and put in the compressor.

20. Transport all specimens and blood products between the Theatres and the Lab.

21. Collect and store Pharmacy drugs/ fluids as requested.

22. To regularly check Theatre Sluices for tidiness and cleanliness.

23. Keep theatre equipment rooms tidy.

24. Check and clean X-ray aprons and equipment.

25. Routinely check common areas in Theatre (Recovery/hallways/instrument room/admin area/office) and clean when necessary

26. To attend Theatre department meetings

Key Tasks within the Surgical Centre and Ward

1. Promote good relationships, communication, and teamwork with all disciplines within the departments and within the hospital.

2. To maintain a friendly, welcoming, and professional manner with all patients and visitors

3. To assist the Ward Nurse to collect patients from recovery and return to the ward.

4. Collect and transfer the patient trolleys from the lifts through to the theatre area.

5. Collect urgent items required from designated departments/wards in the hospital.

6. Maintain all trolleys in a clean condition in line with Infection Control guidelines

7. To transfer newly delivered sharps bins to the storage area, and to transport used and sealed sharps bins for disposal

8. Uphold all policies relating to Health & Safety, Theatre Dress and Confidentiality.

9. Always Demonstrate a caring manner towards patients

10. To assist the nursing staff with lifting, turning, and positioning of patients as necessary.

11. To maintain a close working relationship with the Housekeeping Team, assisting with the presentation of Changing Rooms and public areas.

Responsibility for Equipment

1. Identify and report any problems with equipment if discovered

2. Return Theatre equipment to allocated areas
